Pediatric orthopedic problems
Clubfoot and Ponseti Casting
Diagnosis, causes, and treatment options
Clubfoot is a congenital deformity in which a baby’s foot turns inward and may point downward. It is different from a bunion or hallux valgus and requires assessment by a pediatric orthopedic specialist.
How is clubfoot assessed?
The clinician examines the foot position, flexibility, and ankle movement and checks for associated conditions. Treatment is planned according to the examination and severity.
What is the Ponseti method?
A trained team gradually corrects the foot position through gentle manipulation and a series of casts. A small Achilles tendon release may be needed if tightness remains.
Why does follow-up continue after casting?
A prescribed brace helps maintain correction. Following the bracing plan and attending follow-up visits reduces the risk of recurrence. The treating team sets the brace type and wearing schedule for each child.
Care usually starts soon after birth. This information is educational; a pediatric orthopedic specialist determines the appropriate treatment for each child.
